Geoffrey Chambers, Peak Hill
23. Yes, there is cannibalism in this district.
27. The natives here have a devil called Jin-ge-man or Moon-a-ree. The women are not supposed to see him and if they see him they are killed by any native.
29. To pout the lips means "over there". To draw the bottom lips down means "no". |
|
32. The natives here calculate by the moon. | we-lar-ra is the moon We-lar-ra cood-e-ya = one moon We-lar-ra coot-arra = two moon We-lar-ra mun-gul = three moon Over three moons is yalba or plenty. Months January means nul-bu-ga February means won-nug-ou March means jul-gun-da |
2. Circumcision only, usually performed about age of 15. No sharp instrument used other than piece of chipped flint found in the district. When one of these operations are to be performed the native men collect together and all women are left to the care of two or three old men for perhaps tow or three weeks.
3. The only system (of marriage laws) is that the women may be given by her parents to the men in her infancy, and it often happens that he takes her when she is eight or ten years of age, as his wife. The general rule however appears to be to take any women whom he may fancy even though he has to steal her from some other man, or if need be, fight for the possession of her.
4. Quite incorrect. An instance under my personal notice at the present moment of a native women having half caste boy grown up and now has a black infant. This woman has been in my service since long before the half caste was born. I therefore speak with authority.
5. Round grave, body placed in sitting posture with legs crossed and face set towards his birthplace - usually buried 2 or 3 hours after death - on sandy ground, no service of any kind other than the wails and cries of all that are present.
6. Modes of hairdressing : In their wild state plastered with dirty grease and wilgee until it formed into sections of what appeared like pieces of rope, and a horrid dirty sight.
7. meroo for throwing spear | weerong, spear coondie, small boomerang dowark, large boomerang wollan, kiley made from hard wood wunder, shield |
8. Traps none. Would often dig a large deep hole facing a spring or waterhole. Cover over carefully with rotten twigs etc. which would break and allow the unsuspecting kangaroo or emu to fall in and so become captured. |
9. Nose sticks only. These are often carved with figures of emus, kangaroos, birds, etc.
10. Names of trees etc. Too numerous to give here.
11. Ny system (of justice) whatever unless it be that an eye for an eye or tooth for a tooth can be called by that name, and in this they are most brutal and cowardly. Invariably three to one if possible.
12. Diseases: Native clap, gonorrhoea and chest troubles but these are cess than formerly, colds in the ordinary manner, measles as ourselves. Their wounds appear to heal quickly in spite of dirt and filth and much sooner than a white person - I know of two cases of broken arms when the bones never knitted and both lived for years with the arm swinging. |
|
13. Native remedies: Nothing in the shape of medicines or outside applications, but great believers in what is known as "bullya", man, Doctor - he usually lays the patient on his back and by pressing and squeezing and sucking, he assures the patient that he is taking away the evil that he has come possessed of and which some enemy has stricken him with.
15. Corroborees only | |
16. Extent of tribal country: Wooramal River on the north, Murchison River on the East to Elizabeth Springs and then down the vicinity of the Murchison River to Geraldine Mines. Roughly 200 or 300 natives. |
|
19. Grammatical construction: No.
20. Exchange or barter: This is sometimes practised.
21. Native foods: Roots and plants and seeds, also animal lizard and bird life of all descriptions. All cooked in ashes with exception of seeds which are mostly pounded between two stones and eaten raw.
22. Instances of natives boiling food? At the present time yes, formerly unknown.
23. Cannibalism? At present no, formally yes.
57 | |
24. Woods used in making fire by friction? | Sandalwood or soft dry wood, split, but not entirely parted. The opening thus made is then filled with dry soft grass, a second soft stick is then secured and rubbed as if with a saw, across the first stick. Incidentally?? over the grass. After a few moments of vigorous sawing or rubbing friction takes place and the grass is ignited. |
25. Method of obtaining water from trees etc? | Only one known to me from roots of what we call the malley - these are easily dug up and broken into lengths of about 2 feet and stood on end into a vessel - a drink of not very nice water is soon obtained. |
28. They have implicit faith in their boolyaman or doctor. The boolyaman will show pieces of smooth stones and shells which he maintains he has extracted from some part of his patient by squeezing or sucking and asserts that these were put there by the patient's enemy in some way.
29. Gesture language? I am not aware of any.
30. Masonic signs? I do not think so.
31. Smoke signalling? These are often used, but I believe is done only to let one tribe know of another's approach.
32. They have no calculations further than one day, one moon, and winter and summer.
33. Is it possible to obtain some anthropometrical results? | Yes, by sending some person through this district for that purpose. |
Memo | Although I have tried to give the words I have written as plainly as possible, still I am afraid that one unaccustomed to hear them will find it difficult to get the correct pronunciation of them, for instance the word knal-by - me and you - must not be pronounced as nal-by, neither must the k be allowed to rule the first syllable entirely. It is a word tnat requires the k and n to be pronounced as one, or a combination of both and if spelt thus - hnng-ally, will perhaps give an idea of how to pronounce it - at any rate the k and n have to both be observed and used as one letter and so it is with many other words. In short sentences i have not given many examples and it would be hard to do so - it appears to me that the natives in their language are not overburdened with words as regards numbers of words used and one sentence answers many, as for instance : knung-ga yendda yerra (when you go) is equivalent to our "when are you going", "when will you go", "when shall you go" etc. Neither is he consistent in how he places his words, for instance on one occasion he may say knung-ga yenda yorra - when you go ; and on another he may say yenda knungga yerra - you when go, and thus it is, right through with them - again there is lots of words given in the list that the natives have no word of their own for, as for instance, horse, bullock, sheep and many others. These they simply name the same as we do, often mutilated of course, as for instance : horse, nort; bullock, coolup; sheep, cheep, and so forth. Then we will take the word "work". Not having had any industries of any kind it appears to one that it was no convenience? to have this word, and the same would apply to the word "idleness" and many others that I could mention. General Habits Having been continuously in this district for the past 28 years I can speak authoritatively, both as to their present and past habits and customs. In their wild state they were what might be called a "mixed lot" from a physical point of view. Some of them were fine strapping fellows, often reaching to over 6 feet, while others were puny miserable beings, but |
one and all were filthy to extremes. Cannibalism was rife amongst them and they were born thieves, as far as their white friends were concerned, at any rate. They were highly immoral and would exchange wives one with the other, as it suited them. Their girls were tampered with while mere children with or without the consent of the parents and they were certainly strangers to any good morals in these directions. Things are much better today, especially is this so with the young natives who often turn out smart intelligent fellows, but at the same time he appears to have a tendency to bush walks or run away, which fact alone makes him unreliable as a servant. It is also surprising to see how low dirty and filthy they allow themselves to become while in the bush, even though they have been at work for years and taught to keep themselves fairly clean. In many instances have I noticed this happen and in some cases it has happened with natives who had been cared for by white people from their infancy. Although it cannot be denied that the natives in moments of passion are most cruel and brutal to those who attempt to oppose them while in these moods, it must be admitted that he is generally kind to one and all of his own tribe. Especially was this so when in their wild state. I would be regarded as no trouble to carry (on the shoulders) one who was sick for miles, to see a bulyar man, doctor, and they would always willingly share the smallest morsel of food one with the other. In fact in this particular respect they were far ahead of their white brethren. |
|
T.A. Drage | |
P.S. A word on the ages of natives - these it is hard to obtain any information that would guide one accurately, but I am convinced that a few of them see great ages, but I would not like to say that this was general.
Are the natives dying out? This is undoubtedly the case in this district and had evidently begun before the white man was established among them - I was amongst the first to settle permanently in the district of which I speak and I can well remember native women in their prime who had never borne children and who had not |
been in contact with the whites - these were not isolated cases but were on the contrary numerous and I often thought that probably their own immoral acts as practised amongst themselves, together with the manner in which they were ravished while mere children would perhaps account for it.
