The Abbots give the Nyool nyool dialect with the French - & Billingi's copy must be given to translator as a help in reading the words of the Nyool nyool dialect It resembles Billingi's dialect except that the final syllables of some Broome words - are deleted. Such as: | Broome Eebala - father Womba - man Yooramurroo - 'aunt'- Beagle By Eebal - father Womb man Yooramur - aunt etc |
Billingi's Vocabulary XII 2E 1a will be returned to its Folio (Section XII, 1 - 2 with a typed copy of the translation of the Abbots' Dictionary. Billingee states this was done before the whites came to the country. Unable to have this statement confirmed as all the old men were dead. |
12. Is cannibalism known to exist in district? |
Billingee says no, but when they kill a man, they take his caul fat and rub themselves and their weapons to make them strong. Then on the front of their shields they paint with karrmul the dead body (spirit = ngarree) and show this to everyone. Then the relatives of the dead man try to kill the murderer, but the ngarree on the shields protect him. (They ate the fat.) |
